Hello everyone, My name is Isaac, but all my social media is under RustedFriend. (instagram & youtube)

As far as my technical background goes, I currently work designing, making, and maintaining interactive exhibits at a planetarium/science center. But over the years i've kind of tinkered with just about everything. Mostly on the fabrication side, woodworking, manual & cnc machining, 3d printing, resin and plaster casting, mold making, sewing, welding, etc. But I've also done some simpler robots, microcontroller projects, 3d modeling and animation. Recently i've stared learning some machine learning and experimenting with Isaac Sim.

I've been wanting to get more into robotics for my own purposes and to make cooler exhibits for my job. I want to eventually make a robot docent that can interact with guests. I'm going to start simpler with this build and try to put together a little lidar scanning droid that can make interior maps of buildings. I'm going to try and give it some basic llm functionality to carry out simple commands or be manually remote controlled from a steam deck. If I can get a decent floor plan and interior model out of it, it would be super helpful in setting up exhibits, my wife's architecture work, and compositing animations into live footage.

I do want to focus a bit of my effort on giving it some personality as well. Like how all the types of droids in star wars have a distinct personality type, and then variation from droid to droid. But that might be too much feature creep for this project. I'm going to focus on just getting a spherical lidar working first.

Excited to join the challenge and learn with you all!

Stage 1: complete :white_heavy_check_mark: BETL-001 has a working brain.

Flash went smooth with RDK Studio once I figured out I needed to run it as administrator, otherwise it would fail at the verify step - board was up, on Wi-Fi, and taking SSH
the same night. From there I got greedy and skipped straight past the basic
camera preview to the stereo depth pipeline. The GS130W stereo cam is now
producing a live depth map on the BPU at ~14.6 fps, and YOLOv8n is running
on-device alongside it, picking me out of the workshop clutter just fine.

The one rabbit hole: the depth preview renders upside-down. The sensors mount
rotated 90°, so naturally I tried rotating another 180° in software - and the
camera node just dies with "Target FOV out of valid range." Turns out only the
factory 90° orientation has valid rectification calibration; anything else
collapses the FOV to zero. The depth data itself is geometrically correct, so
the fix is mount design, not software. This isn't a huge issue, I think it should be solvable with an actual mount. That was just the convenient way the cabling made the camera sit on my table.

Full writeup - commands, versions, evidence shots - is in the repo:

I had a vacation that made it so I couldn't do much robot work last week, but now i'm back and started cadding a rough sketch to figure out proportions for my robot. Hopefully I can start building the frame in the next few days.

Great work! :party_popper: It's awesome to see both the stereo depth pipeline and YOLO running smoothly on the RDK X5.

Thanks for sharing your findings and documenting the issue with the camera orientation-it will definitely help other developers in the community.

Looking forward to seeing BETL-001 evolve and your robot project in Stage 2!

Started designing these fenders last night because there's no good place to mount an encoder on the outside. But also, got a single motor running today.
