Out of many pressure cooker brands, we chose Instant Pot Duo because of its popularity. This model has three different versions, but the buttons should all be similar and self-explanatory.

How to use an Instant Pot cooker?

According to pressure cooker reviews, all pressure cookers should have similar buttons with similar functions, although the name might vary slightly.

Step 1: Plug in your pressure cooker. Since Instant Pot is an electric cooker, you have to plug it into an outlet before use.

Step 2: Make sure the cooking pot (or “inner pot”) is clean and in place inside the cooking base. The cooking base is the inner surface of the cooker itself. Some people call it a “housing”, or a “heating base”, or “cooker base”.

Step 3: Make sure the safety gears are in place. This includes the silicon gasket underneath the lid and the float valve. Both the gasket and the valve are responsible for sealing the air from the cooker. If air gets in, the cooker might have trouble building up pressure.

Once the cooker reaches its desired pressure, you should see the float valve pop up, locking the cooker. This is to protect users from abrupt release of high pressure, which can cause the lid flying in your face.

Step 4: Seal the lid, make sure you hear a click when it’s closed.

Step 5: Turn the pressure release handle from “venting” to “sealing”. The “venting” mode is for after you finish cooking and need to release steam. Releasing the steam lowers the pressure, making it safe to open the lid.

Step 6: Choose the correct button. However, with the exception of “Rice” and “Slow Cook”, all the other buttons cook on high pressure using the same temperature, only with varying time.

The times are pre-set according to the different cooking styles. The producers of Instant Pot had users’ comfort in mind when they designed this. But even the best pressure cooker can’t know how much food you’re cooking or what kind of idea you’re having on how you want your food to taste. Hence, the best advice is to stick to your recipe and go with whichever button that has the closest timing. Unless you’re really unsure or are cooking for the first time,  you don’t need to follow the automatic.

The “Rice” button cooks on low pressure, and will adjust according to how much rice and water you’re using. The “Slow Cook” cooks at low, medium, or high pressure that you need to adjust manually.

Step 7: After adjusting for the time, now you just have to wait! The Instant Pot Duo doesn’t require pressing a “Start” button, but it will make a little beep to let you know once it starts cooking.

Step 8: When the time ends, let the cooker rest for a couple of minutes to let off steam. Remember to switch the pressure release handle to “Venting” before you open the lid. Remove the lid face-down, pointing it away from your face.

Step 9: Remember to clean the inner pot after cooking to ensure sanitation. The inner pot is removable so it should be fairly easy to clean.

Above are the 9 steps on how to cook with an Instant Pot Duo. Thank you for reading and good luck!
