Hermiston, Oregon - Where Life Is Sweet

Hermiston's economy diversified in the 1970s when the advent of center-pivot irrigation turned 100,000 acres around town into a farmland boomtown. Potatoes fueled McDonald's fries, and River Point Farms and Lamb Weston supplied Subway with 70 percent of its red onions. But it was Hermiston's watermelons that really exploded.

Hermiston's Early History

Hermiston, the largest city in Eastern Oregon, is rich in people, land and resources. Located near the Umatilla National Wildlife Refuge, Blue Mountain Community College and Eastern Oregon University, Hermiston offers residents an abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities. The Columbia River and the beautiful Blue Mountains are just a short drive away, offering fishing, hiking, biking and water sports.

The town got its start in the 1860’s and '70’s as a stop on the trails for both freighters and travelers heading west. During this time, the town had a Six Mile House that served as a sturdy hotel and overnight stay for trail-weary travelers.

A big change came with the completion of Cold Springs Reservoir, constructed by the Bureau of Reclamation in 1908. The reservoir allowed irrigated farming to take hold in Hermiston and surrounding areas. During the 1970's Hermiston's economy saw dramatic growth with the introduction of center-pivot irrigation wells. The Hermiston area became known as "The Onion Capital of the World," and both Lamb Weston and Simplot opened potato processing plants, resulting in Hermiston becoming the second-largest producer of frozen potatoes in the nation.

Hermiston also saw a boom in manufacturing during this time. The Union Pacific Hinkle Rail Yard and the UMATILLA Army Depot brought in a number of large employment projects. Currently, the region is enjoying the benefits of a healthy local retail and service market. The Hermiston Public Library is a busy, well-used facility that is supported by an active Friends group.

Oleta's Death

Hermiston, Oregon is a community where life is sweet. It is a mid-sized town in the heart of the Columbia Basin known for its watermelon farming, Walleye Tournament and Cinco de Mayo celebration.

Hermiston has been recognized as a model of best practices for economic development, agricultural and civic leadership by many organizations and agencies. This recognition is due in large part to the strong commitment of Hermiston residents and businesses.

In early 2016, the Hermiston Futures Task Force, Branding and Community Promotion Committee began developing a unique community brand that would bring the essence of Hermiston to life. The process involved extensive community input and collaboration. Through individual interviews, online and printed surveys, and other data collection methods, the committee listened to Hermiston residents and business owners about what makes this incredible place special.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille of Aloha; one son and two daughters, both of Hermiston; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild; a brother and a sister; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Heart Fund or to the Oregon Cancer Society.

In late winter and early spring, Hermiston can experience some harsh weather conditions, especially during the night. This is because of a phenomenon called the Arctic Oscillation, which occurs when the cold air from the north meets the warm air from the south. As a result, the temperatures can drop dramatically in just a few hours. Fortunately, these weather conditions usually don't last long. Other than these extreme conditions, Hermiston is generally temperate throughout the year.
