When the large antenna is not tested at a fixed location with a fixed signal strength from the cell towers, but moved to a place where the bare 4G doesn't have reception, it does seem to work and extend the signal range.

I put the robot in the elevator and let it drive down to the basement.
Using the bare 4G stick it would loose connection on the first floor and only rarely if at all come back online when in the basement.

Using the large antenna the signal is lost on the ground floor and the robot comes back online while in the basement.
